FMCCS Scholarships and Awards

The Foundation of Monroe County Community Schools manages and administers 30 scholarships and awards to support a variety of educational opportunities for high school students. For information on establishing a scholarship or award, please contact the Foundation at 330-7700. To apply for a Foundation scholarship, please visit your high school guidance office. Applications for the Abel, Veach and Stroup Scholarships should be submitted directly to the Foundation at 315 North Drive Bloomington, IN 47401.  The names of recent recipients are provided below.

Charles Abel Memorial Scholarship - $1,000.00

This scholarship is awarded to one high school senior each year from any MCCSC high school who will pursue a post-secondary course of study in a construction-related field. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 or equivalent, a good work ethic, the respect of their peers, and a history of community involvement.

LeAnna Beth Anderson Memorial Scholarship - $395.00

Available annually to a graduating Hoosier Hill's student who will be enrolling in an advanced educational or training program next school year. The recipient must have a minimum grade average of C and is chosen on the basis of financial need and academic performance.

Julia Beth Brabson Memorial Scholarship - Amount Varies

Awarded annually to a band student from South to attend a summer band camp. Recipients are chosen by the band director.

The Sam Burgess Memorial Scholarship - $280.00

Given annually to a promising underclassman soccer player from South to help defray a portion of the expense to attend a summer soccer camp or program. The recipient is selected by the soccer coaches and the athletic director.

Business and Professional Women's Club Award - $165.00

Presented annually at both North and South to a graduating female based upon scholastic ability and dedication to the business/commercial field. Preference is given to a student planning to enroll in IU/Bloomington or Ivy Tech Bloomington.

The Donald Childs Medal - Medal Only

Awarded at both North and South to a senior, male student participating in athletics. The recipient should have the highest cumulative rating in academic scholarship, in athletic ability, in sportsmanship, and in school citizenship. The candidate is nominated by the director of athletics and the school's scholarship committee.

The Laura Childs Grant - $250.00

Given each year to one athlete from both North and South who has exhibited exemplary sportsmanship and citizenship and who will attend a college or university in the Fall. The candidate is to be nominated by the head coaches and the principal.

The Cleveland Scholarship - $250.00

Awarded annually to a graduating senior, male or female, who excels in scholarship, leadership, service, and character. The recipient should have a financial need for a scholarship in order to attend the college or university of his/her choice. One recipient is chosen from both North and South High Schools.

The James R. Eberly Scholarship - $280.00

Awarded on alternating years to a student from North, South or Aurora. It is given to a graduating senior who will study Fine Arts at Indiana University. The Eberly family would be particularly pleased if the recipient is planning to eventually teach art but it is not a requirement for the scholarship award.

Florence Hamilton Scholarship - $225.00

This scholarship is awarded annually to a high school senior who is academically ranked in the upper third of the class and who is worthy of assistance in furthering his or her post-high school education or training. Presented to one student from North and one from South.

The Bertha Elizabeth Rogers Hinkle Memorial Scholarship - $1,750.00

Awarded annually to a graduating female interested in a career in retailing, merchandising or business. The candidate should excel in scholarship, leadership, and character. The recipient should have financial need and should be recommended by the school's scholarship committee.

IU Credit Union and FMCCS Student Leadership Awards - $100/each

These awards are to be given to graduating seniors excelling in character, leadership, and service among their peers or in the community. Particular attention is given to those students who possess leadership qualities but who do not necessarily participate in highly visible activities. The awards are co-sponsored by the Foundation of MCCS and the IU Credit Union. Nine awards are presented annually to three students from North, three from South, two from Hoosier Hills and one from Aurora.

The Isaiah Stroup Memorial Scholarship - $500.00

This scholarship is awarded annually to a senior graduating from any MCCSC high school program.  Applicants should have satisfied all requirements for graduation, be in good academic standing, and exhibited a commitment to community and to school engagement throughout their high school careers. 

James F. Thompson Quill and Scroll Award - $235.00

This cash award is available to a sophomore or junior who has demonstrated an interest in the English language, writing and journalism. The student should have a superior attendance record. The recipient is to be selected by the journalism teachers and the principal and he/she should be attending the same high school next school year. This award alternates annually between North and South.

The Elena T. Veach Memorial Scholarship - $500.00

This scholarship is awarded annually to an MCCSC high school senior pursuing a post-secondary course of study at Butler University.  Applicants should have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 and possess a strong work ethic, the respect of their peers, and a commitment to community and school involvement.

The L. Jon Wertheim Journalism Award - $500.00

This scholarship is awarded annually to a graduating journalism student at Bloomington High School North. The award was established to honor Sports Illustrated writer and Bloomington North graduate, L. John Wertheim. The award is meant to encourage a young journalist to pursue a career in writing.

The Gregory L. Mongold Math Scholarship- $2,000
This scholarship is awarded annually to a graduating MCCSC senior interested in pursuing a post-secondary course of study in a math related field. This award was established to honor the passion Greg Mongold had for math and education. The recipient is chosen based on their academic success and financial need.

The Fred Simic Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded annually to a graduating North student interested in pursuing a post-secondary course of study in a health care related field. This award was established by the family of Fred Simic to honor those health care professionals who assisted them during their hard times. Recipients should demonsrate academic success, community involvement and financial need.
